Technology, our ability to understand it and use it, is an important tool for anyone to compete for jobs in our increasingly global business economy. As most of us know all too well, the percentage of women in the technology field is significantly low compared to males in the same field. Girls will shape the future of Technology!! Get involved! To answer the question, if more girls/women were in technology the industry would change significantly. I lived in San Francisco /Silicon Valley for 3 years, and what I saw shocked me. There were many men in the game, and I saw many asian, white, and Indian, but what I did not see is black and hispanic women or men. It was very discouraging, and extremely sad. So, anyone that I met in technology, my first question would be, where are my people? Are they not majoring in this field? The answer I always got was “unfortunately there is that many black or hispanics currently in the field, but companies life Facebook and Google are going into high-schools, and campaigning for participation and explaining the great opportunities available to those who are interested. So, I decided to go work for Yelp the new Yellow Pages of the 21st century. And as I suspected after being hired, I was the only black women in a room of about 75 people.
I look forward to Walden Women in Technology, decreasing the gap that currently exists, so women of all nationalities can enjoy the benefits a career in technology can offer.
